In an album you can experiment,” he says.

He’s excited about singing an item number with Asha Bhonsle in Bewafa. “She’s been my icon for ages. She has reinvented herself with the changing times,” he sums up.

Shaan loves to sing in English too. “Singing in Mumbai Matinee and Valentine’s Day gave me confidence. I have no training in classical music but I can pull off a semi-classical bandish,” says Shaan, who’s also planning to do fusion with alaaps on the chartbuster Koi kahe number (Dil Chahta Hai).

As a child, Shaan began his career by singing ad jingles. After giving it up for a brief period, he soon returned to it, and also began to sing remixes and cover versions. In the 1987 movie Parinda, when he was only 15 years of age, Shaan sang a singular line in the song, Kitni Pyari Hai Dosti Hamari. He hosted the television show, Sa Re Ga Ma Pa on Zee TV, which won the Music Programme of the Year award at the Indian Telly Awards in 2003. At the same awards function, Shaan won Best TV Music Director, for creating the music of the Zee TV show, Lipstick, for friend, Goldie Behl. He also appeared as the guest in the first episode of the new show Antakshari: The Great Challenge which aired on 9 February 2007 on Star One. Do audience votes really help in identifying the actual singing talent in television reality shows? Views differ, but what audience votes do is to add the suspense element to such shows, according to well-known Bollywood playback singer and reality show host Shaan.

"Left to the judges, they can listen to everyone three or four times at the most and they can tell you that he or she is your best singer," Shaan told IANS, in Dubai, in a freewheeling interview.

"But that sense of uncertainty, that sense of suspense... Who is gone this time? What is going to happen? It all stems from this audience voting," he said.

The singer was in Dubai to perform along with Pakistani bands Strings and Overload at a concert organised as part of the 'Eid in Dubai' festivities.

He dismissed notions that channels gain financially through the SMSes by which viewers send in their votes to choose their favourite singer.

"A lot of people think that revenues have come to the channel and that is why they have started this SMS system. But that's not true. The channel gets no money. It's only the SMS people (mobile service operators) who get the money," said the host of such popular reality shows like 'Sa-Re-Ga-Ma' on Zee TV and now 'Star Voice of India' on Star Plus.

"But it (audience vote) leaves that little window of suspense and climax at the end," he said.

The audience voting system also helps in the longevity of such shows, which usually run for three-odd months or so, Shaan added.

Asked whether winners of such reality shows actually find a place in the music industry after the show gets over, Shaan said the participants sometimes found themselves in an ironic situation.

"It's a very ironic situation that occurs once you become a popular name through reality shows. You have become popular but in a way you have not attained success because you have not made your own music.

"A lot of people want to be successful so that they can drive big cars and buy a nice house and do lots of shows and be popular and sign autographs.

"Now, a reality show winner does that without a single song, you know, without a solid repertoire of music of his own. But where is the thirst, where is the want? The fringe benefits are already there," he said.

So, what would be his advice to such participants?

"The passion and the thirst has to stay. If you feel that you are in music for the popularity, for the name and the fame, then it's not going to help.

"It has to be that spirit, that thirst to do something musical, to grow as a musician and that should be your connection with music right from the beginning to the end."

Asked how many of such reality show participants have actually found a foothold in the music industry, he said: "Lots of them."

As examples, he named 'Sa-Re-Ga-Ma' winner Debojit Saha, 'Indian Idol' participant Rahul Vaidya and Toshi Sabri, who came fourth in 'Star Voice of India'.

He also made a special mention of Irfan Ali who had lost out in last year's 'Star Voice of India'.

"Irfan - there is a boy I have a lot of hope for to come and do better later," he said.

But if there is one singer Shaan will really bet on, it is Debojit Saha.

"I think Debojit is fantastic. He has got a brilliant voice, a brilliant range, he is a complete singer. If I have to take one bet, I think it is Debojit," he stated.

Famous Bollywood playback singer Shaan is among the best singers on the block but he continues to take music lessons from his teacher.

A friend of the singer said: "Shaan says that he is still a student as far as singing is concerned. Though he is already an acclaimed singer, he continues taking tutorials under the guidance of Gulam Mustafa Khan sahab.

"Shaan feels that every time he learns the art from his master, he discovers something new - an aspect of singing that he hasn't explored."

Shaan (born Shantanu Mukherjee), was a host for the popular show Sa Re Ga Ma Pa from 2000-2006 and also for Sa Re Ga Ma Pa L’il Champs. He was born into a Bengali family and is the son of the late music director Manas Mukherjee and brother of singer Sagarika. He is married to Radhika and has two sons, Soham and Shubh. He is the grandson of Jahar Mukherjee.

As a child, Shaan began his career by singing ad jingles. After giving it up for a brief period, he soon returned to it, and also began to sing remixes and cover versions. Apart from his albums, Shaan has sung playback vocals for various Bollywood films, including Pyaar Mein Kabhi Kabhi, Bas Itna Sa Khwab Hai, Lakshya, Dil Chahta Hai, Kal Ho Na Ho, Hum Tum, Dhoom, Dus, Salaam Namaste, Fight Club, Don – The Chase Begins Again, Fanaa, Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna, and Om Shanti Om.

Shaan is now the host of another very popular music show, Star Voice of India (SVOI), which airs on Star Plus. Along with singing, Shaan has also acted in the movie, Daman, also starring Raveena Tandon. He has made appearances in his songs in the movies, Zameen and Hungama.

Many have laughed over the pranks played by VJ Siddharth Kannan on co-actor Baba Sehgal on Zoom’s “Santa Banta Unlimited”. But the tables were turned on him when singer Shaan pulled a fast one on him.

The naughty singer, who is Siddharh’s good friend, took a cue from the film “Sholay” where Amitabh Bachchan goes to Hema Malini’s aunt and tells her about Dharmendra’s bad habits albeit as a loyal friend.

Similarly, when Shaan met Siddharth’s mother during his recent trip to Chennai, he casually told her: “Aunty, Sid is a great TV host, but his chain smoking and drinking habits worry me. He is a loving and humble person but has only about six to seven brawls a week. He is such a talented and busy guy, it is amazing how he manages to be out at the disco and hang around with girls till the wee hours every night.”

After hearing all this, Siddharth’s mother was hysterical thinking her son had changed into a ‘bad boy’ overnight. She immediately called up Siddharth, who was stunned when his mother reprimanded him for his lifestyle.

Siddharth later realised that it was a prank played by Shaan.

“In true ‘Sholay’ style he tried to pull my leg by making up my non-existent habits in front of my mom. I’m a Tamil-Brahmin, a teetotaller, non-smoker and am not even capable of hurting an ant,” said a bemused Siddharth.

According to inside sources, Shaan had to spend quite some time convincing Siddharth’s mother that her son is not that bad after all.

They say when there is music within your heart, it has to be heard. So was the case with Shantanu Mukherjee, aka Shaan, who tried dabbling with other vocations before coming back to what he loved and did best - singing. Getting to where he stands now, was of course, no easy task. That probably explains his easy, unassuming disposition.

Shaan did have a fairly illustrious musical background. His father was composer Manas Mukherjee, who has scored music for films such as Shaayad and Albert Pinto Ko Gussa Kyon Aata Hai. As a child, Shaan started out by singing ad jingles, and then gradually gave it up. However, soon returned to it, and started doing odd music assignments, such as singing remixes and cover versions, apart from ad jingles.

Though Q-Funk was Shaan's first release in 1995, the album that fetched him more recognition was his second release, Roop Inka Mastana, a remixed version of R D Burman's hits. It was made possible by remix guru Biddu, who rechristened him Shaan. The album featured artistes besides Shaan, and included older sister, Sagarika. In 1996, the sibling duo came out with Naujawan, their first big release. The album managed to generate a lukewarm response

Shaan made his solo debut with the album, Loveology in 1996 - a commonplace pop album that did not do his career much good. This time round, he was written off by critics, who thought he was just another of the talentless multitude.

But lady luck at last decided to smile down upon Shaan in 2000, and the singer delivered Tanha Dil, an exceptionally promising album, featuring some soulful ballads, as well as catchy tunes. The album finally established him as a serious singer of considerable worth.

Shaan's foray into film music was with the film Pyaar Mein Kabhi Kabhi in which he sang two numbers, Musu musu and Woh pehli baar. He is now back with Raju Chacha, where he croons Tune mujhe pehchana nahin for Ajay Devgan.

The singer has gone one step further in 2001, by dominating the credits of Bas Itna Sa Khwaab Hai... Music director Aadesh Shrivastava has entrusted him with the responsibility of carrying the score on his
shoulders, and he has done so admirably. Shaan's vocals sit pretty on five tracks, making it his best bet yet.

The young singer remains a self-taught musician, who has received no formal training. Singing apart, Shaan even composes and pens the lyrics of some of his songs. Not the one to be steadfast in an ever-changing industry, Shaan claims that he is open to all kinds of assignments, be it singing ad jingles, doing playback for films, or giving live performances.

Apart from his albums, Shaan has sung playback vocals for various Bollywood films, including Pyaar Mein Kabhi Kabhi, Bas Itna Sa Khwab Hai , Lakshya, Dil Chahta Hai, Kal Ho Na Ho, Hum Tum, Dhoom, Dus, Salaam Namaste, Fight Club, Don - The Chase Begins Again, Fanaa, Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna, and Om Shanti Om. He hosted the television show, Sa Re Ga Ma Pa on Zee TV, which won the Music Programme of the Year award at the Indian Telly Awards in 2003. In 2007, he left the host job and then was replaced by 21 year-old Aditya Narayan. At the same awards function, Shaan won Best TV Music Director, for creating the music of the Zee TV show, Lipstick, for friend, Goldie Behl.

He also appeared as the guest in the first episode of the new show Antakshari: The Great Challenge which aired on 9 February 2007 on Star One.

Shaan is also a very popular choice for 'Pro Shows' which are conducted as a part of the cultural festivals of various colleges. Among the prominent cult festivals where he has performed live recently are Spring Fest of IIT Kharagpur, Mood Indigo of IIT Bombay ,Raagam of NIT Calicut and in Alcheringa of IIT Guwahati. Recently he performed live in an IBM event "Imprint 2008, Bangalore" for IBM GBS GD exclusively.

His song "Chand Sifarish" from the movie Fanaa (2006) and "Jab se Tere Naina" from Saawariya won the Filmfare Best Male Playback Award and the Zee Cine Award Best Playback Singer - Male apart from receiving several other nominations.

Shaan was nominated for Filmfare five times out of which he won two for Chaand,Sifarish and Jab Se Tere Naina. For the past two years he has been bagging all the prestigious awards like Zee Screen, LIFA and others in succession. Big banners Bollywood films have his voice on their soundtracks like Don, Om Shanti Om,Saawariya and may more movies to be releases in 2009, like Three Idiots, Mr and Mrs Khanna and Alladin.
